Antonio Rossellino Italian, Florentine, 1427-1479
Detail from: Madonna and Child with Angels
The grave expression of this Madonna, contrasting sharply with the impish demeanor of her Son, foreshadows Christ’s future suffering.
The mottled brownish marble of Rossellino’s psychologically vivid relief, as well as its style, bear comparison with the bust of Giovanni Chellini in the Victoria and Albert Musuem ( dated 1456), and the figure of Saint Sebastian at Empoli*(dated around 1460). This delicately carved low-relief was presumably produced during the same period in his career. The traces of gilding visible throughout are original.
