Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve, St. Bride's, Newfoundland and Labrator, Canada During the height of the breeding season, Cape St. Mary’s has 24,000 Northern Gannet, 20,000 Black-legged Kittiwake, 20,000 Common Murre, and 2,000 Thick-billed Murre, 100 pairs of Razorbill, 60 pairs of Black Guillemot nesting on Bird Rock and the nearby cliffs. It’s the third largest and most southern Gannet rookery in North America and the continent’s most accessible seabird rookery. Unfortunately, when I visited the reserve in late August, only the Northern Gannets were still there but at least the weather was sunny and pleasant. Often the Cape area is covered with dense fog making the nesting birds difficult to observe.
