The Dettifoss is the largest waterfall in northeast Iceland and perhaps the most powerful in Europe. Here the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum drops about 45 m deep and over a width of 100 m into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. 500 cubic metres of water per second plunge over the edge. Because of its primordial character, the waterfall is featured in the 2012 science-fiction film Prometheus.
