What excuse do I have for taking a picture of this most photographed of statues from Brompton Cemetery? Still- it's one of the most hauntingly beautiful monuments I know of.
On the open stone book next to the statue it says (in Italian):
'To the Dear Memory of Teresa Sangiorgi Born 21 April 1834 Died 6 August 1898'
'In memory of Giovanni Sangiorgi Born in Imola 15 February 1848 Died in London 10 May 1909 Buried in Imola
Peace to his beautiful soul'
All I know about this monument is that there was an Italian restauranteur of the same name listed in the 1891 census in London. See this superb website on Brompton cemetery:
